The Official Rules for Equine Ideal: Spring 2008 Online Photography Contest
By entering the contest, entrant agrees to be bound by these rules and to accept as final all decisions of the judges appointed by Equine Photographers' Network
ENTRANTS
- All entries must be original works created solely by the entrant and by entering, entrant warrants that such entries are their own original works with full copyright owned by the entrant and no other person or entity. No entries will be accepted or valid for this competition if they are joint works comprised of works from multiple photographers or artists.
- Entrant must be 18 years or older
- Amateur Division- Entrants who do not have earnings in excess of $1000 per year from the sale of photographic products or services entering work that has not been previously published or awarded in other equine photography competitions.
- Professional Division-Entrants who have earnings in excess of $1000 per year from the sale of photographic products or services entering work that have not been previously awarded in other equine photography competitions.
- Copyright of the image remains the property of the contestant.
- Winning entries will be displayed with text overlay of copyright symbol and photographer/company name (ex. © Joe Smith )
- By entering this contest, entrants are giving permission for their photographs to be displayed on www.equinephotocontest.com and/or www.equinephotographers.net by the EPNet for the purposes of online voting related to the submissions and/or for display of winning entries, promotion and/or reporting of the contest. Additional permission will be sought from entrant before their images would be used in any medium other than EPNet affiliated web sites.
- Entrant acknowledges that they have sufficient permission of any recognizable models or other persons appearing in the photograph to be able to grant to www.equinephotographers.net the right to publish their photographic submission online, and hereby grant to Equine Photographers' Network such right.
- Contest is closed to the contest organizer, staff and judges of the current contest.
- Best of Show, Peoples' Choice and First Place photos from previous Equine Ideal Contests are not eligible for entry.
JUDGING
Eligible Entries will be judged by a panel of two professional equine photographers appointed by members of the Equine Photographers' Network based on the below criteria:
- Impact: Is there a strong first impression? Does the image hold your attention? Will it stand the test of time?
- Equipment Expertise: Includes exposure, shutter speed, focus, depth of field, appropriate focal length, cropping.
- Technical/Artistic Expertise: Includes composition, backgrounds, foregrounds, diagonal lines, the principle of thirds, attention to details, perspective, center of interest and how all of these support the picture as a whole.
- Light and Color: Includes use of color, light and shadows, contrast. How does the color and use of light in the photo enhance or detract from the image or set the mood?
- Subject Matter: Subject is of main importance, additional elements and background do not compete. Photographer demonstrates understanding of the subject.
- Creativity: Originality, uniqueness, freshness of vision.
- Suitability: The photo is suitable for the class in which it is entered.
PROFESSIONAL- The winner of each of the 7 professional categories will be eligible for the award "Best of Show-Professional" to
be determined by a vote of the presiding judging panel. Ribbons will be awarded through sixth place in each category.
Prizes will be awarded through third place.
- Performance - Horse(s) in competition, training or work. Under saddle or in harness. Horse(s) must be in motion
- Horses and Humans - Illustrating the bond between horse and human. Must show a horse with a person, or parts of horses and humans interacting.
- Head Study - The horses head only, no people. May be one or multiple heads
- The Horse at Liberty - Showing the horse in its natural environment: pasture, in the wild, etc. May or may not be in motion.
- Extreme Action - Rodeo, racing, jumping, obstacles, or running free, must depict extreme action and the athleticism of the horse.
- Black & White - Black and white photos of horse(s) Sepia also allowed. No color!
- Details - Close up detail studies of the horse: eyes, body parts, horse related gear and equipment also qualifies
AMATEUR-The winner of each of the 7 amateur categories will be eligible for the award, "Best of Show-Amateur" to be

PEOPLES' CHOICE - The Peoples' Choice voting will be held April 5 thru 15. The top 10 photos in each of the
14 classes will be included in the Peoples' Choice voting. The top ten photos are determined by the judges as described above. Members of the public are
invited to cast their vote for their favorite amateur and professional photo.
Prize and ribbon will be awarded to the Peoples' Choice in each division (Professional and Amateur).
GENERAL
- Entries must be submitted online as JPEG files in accordance with file upload instructions as detailed below:
- JPG in RGB or Grayscale format
- No more than 720 pixels in length or height
- File size under 1 MB
- No identifying text overlay or adjacent credit on contest entries
- Title will not be considered in judging but will be displayed with winning images
- Images not adhering to size limitations will be auto resized by image uploading function.
- All submissions are final. There will be a $10 service charge per request for editing or modifying of any photograph after submission.
- Entries considered not complying with the rules and conditions of the contest or in the judging panel's discretion, inappropriate or offensive will be disqualified and removed from website and subsequent judging without refund to entrant.
- Entries received without full payment will not be judged. Payment by check must be postmarked March 5, 2008.
- Entries must be received before midnight March 5, 2008 EST in order to be eligible for the contest. No late submission will be accepted
- Equine Photographers' Network, EPNet appointed contest judges, any EPNet member or other agent or representative of EPNet involved with managing or operating this contest will not be liable for any omission, loss, damage, delay, illegibility, alteration of, or unauthorized access to entries submitted, nor for loss or injury to any entrant or entrant's property (including the equipment, systems or data of entrants or others) due to participating in the contest, visiting any related web sites or any prize awarded.
- If the contest cannot be run as planned for any reason, including computer viruses, tampering, technical or other problems which damage its operation or integrity, EPNet and/or it's appointed judges reserve the right to cancel, delay or modify it.
- The contest award prizes, rules and conditions are subject to change without prior notice to all contestants.
- Taxes, if any, on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners.
- The winners will be notified by email, at the email address provided on the winner’s registration. While every reasonable effort will be made to contact each winner, the Equine Photographers' Network is not responsible should prizes go unclaimed.
- This contest is governed by the laws of the State of New York, exclusive of conflict of laws provisions.
- This contest is void where prohibited by law.
